Weak clutch pedal return spring?

1994 900 SE turbo RHD
120,000 km (72,000 mi)
Had the clutch cable snap yesterday, it went at the clutch actuator arm. Now, I just had this replaced 6 months ago at 100,000 km (60,000 mi) at the dealer so I wasn't too happy.
It was towed to the dealer, and they said they would replace the cable FOC (free of charge).
OK, so they were trying to fix it for 5(!) hours, main problem was some return spring on the clutch pedal. I've been told this is weak, difficult to lock, they will order a new one, please come back again in 2 weeks.
What gives? It engages pretty near the floor now, lots of free play, and I've got to put my foot under the pedal to engage cruise, has anyone else had this give up? Wasn't that way before.
Thanks.
Vincent
