The reason I changed the first clutch cable

was that I felt it was getting stiff, and had started to creak. I definitely did not expect the second one to give up so soon. I was more worried about the bit that's attached to the pedal falling off as the mechanics seemed to have a problem getting it to lock. It's also probably the first time these mechanics have seen a customer head first under the instrument panel to look at the problem. (I was an aircraft/NDT tech for years - C130 fuel tanks call for some gymnastics :)
Don't really want to be trying to hook that cable back on out in the boonies somewhere because of a botched job, but I did want to know what needed to be done. The only thing they're going to 'fix' in two weeks is replacing the return spring - the clutch cable has already been changed.
I'm going to keep the old(original) cable in the car as a spare after I've cleaned it up. At least it'll get me home in a pinch.
Cheers
