You say you got the clay but "Alas the clay in my hand rubbing across the finish!". That sounds like a real bummer! Did you try using used motor oil? Sometimes that helps. Also, the very best way to remove swirl marks is to use a propane torch - this softens the paint VERY QUICKLY. In NO TIME those swirl marks will be history! Try it and see what I mean. Be sure to light the flame with a match according to the directions before you begin softening the paint. Otherwise it does not work nearly as well.
