If I paid $36 for paint detailing clay and a lubricant, I'd be pissed off too.
FWIW to y'all, last weekend I detailed a '01 Chevy truck that's seen nothing but a hard life. The swirls and light scratches were serious. I busted out my Porter Cable rotary, Meguiar's Compound Power Cleaner, and a cutting pad and went to work on the hood. Removed about 90% of the swirls and scratches.
Funny thing, the surface was still a bit rough to the touch. Ya know what I had to use to get the paint silky smooth? Yup, clay. Compound Power Cleaner is the 2nd most aggressive product Meguiar's makes ( MUCH more aggressive than Scratch X ) but it still didn't remove all the surface crud.
Should you believe the so-called hype about clay? I don't know. But it works for me and lots of other people. Just because it didn't meet the expectations of one person doesn't mean everything written about it is a lie.
I hope my post was helpful.
