No, I meant rotary. I have both machines - a 7424 random orbital and a new 7428 rotary.
As I'm sure you know, the orbital machine is almost foolproof. It's practically impossible to mess up your paint with that machine. But a rotary can do a job so much quicker and with so much more ease that it's a must-have tool if you're going to detail several cars.
You're right, the heat generated by a rotary, combined with the correct pad and polish, can remove almost any swirl mark or light to moderate scratch. The serious jobs are almost impossible to accomplish with an orbital.
The benefit of an orbital to a casual enthusiast is that the machine basically takes the place of arm work, offers better results in less time than doing it by hand, all with a fairly low risk factor. For most folks, this is all they need and will satisfy almost everyone but the OCD nut cases.
Since I've gone back to a rotary I can tell you it's a lot more challenging to maintain control of the machine. You've really got to pay attention to what you're doing and how the product is working. You've got to closely watch your edges along with the trim, seams, body lines, etc. to avoid damage. With an orbital you can let your mind wander a bit as the machine really isn't going to hurt anything. A rotary needs 100% focus.
What I've been doing lately is getting the hard work done with the rotary then following up with the orbital to finish off the panel. This produces no swirl marks, no hologramming from the rotary, and killer results. So far all my customer's love how their cars look. So that's two different machines with different pads, speeds, and products. Overkill for the average car owner. But an orbital will do the trick for most folks at a more affordable cost.
