AMSOIL makes a product called Miracle Wash. Unless you have caked mud, you can safely spray this on, towel it around to clean and polish, and buff with another terrycloth towel. I've found it to work very well and quickly. You can also find Wash-n-Dry (bit more expensive but does the same kind of job).
After you've done this, folks tell me that a wet towel, then dry towel works well (something like Mike Lynch described).
