Today was our semi-annual "run what you brung" day at Lebanon Valley Dragway. There was a guy there runnung a stock 1/2 ton GMC pickup with a 350 and automatic transmission. He had removed the tailgate for better aerodynamics. and was pretty consistant at 16.2-16.3 sec. His best time was 16.2.
I asked him to try running with the tailgate closed. At first he looked at me like I was a complete idiot. I then explained this discussion and the theory that the tailgate creating a high pressure bubble in the bed allowing air to flow over it smoothly. He was still skeptical but finally tried a run with the gate closed. The ET with the gate closed was 15.9. Unfortunately I couldn't convince him to try it until the end of the day so he only had time to try it once.
It appears that running with the tailgate closed resulted in a 0.3 sec improvement in 1/4 mile time. I would assume that it would also increase fuel economy at highway speeds.
