Well, I would have said down, but I can see where there could be a bubble of air in the bed with the gate up that smoothes the airflow. Here's why...
Many years back I was in an El Camino with a 2x2x3 foot box in the back that contained a bathroom vanity. It was right up against the back of the cab and NOT tied down (brain cramp!). I got on the Interstate and about the time I hit 75 the thing levitated right out of the bed--ZOOM!--it was gone in a nanosecond!
No one else on the road (thank the gods) and it basically exploded on landing. And yes, I did stop to clean it up.
But it makes me think now that the low pressure area in the bed really works as air passes over the cab.
