Scott, if you rig a raised stand that supports it tilted up at the back the heat will flow off much better. Support from the sides so that there is not a damm at the back edge, with space a the front as well. Or support the unit vertical on the left or right side if other considerations allow.
I agree about heat coming up through the keyboard.
