Not sure if this is true of all Laptops, but I know it to be true of my Dell and Toshiba...if you run your laptop on batteries for an extended period and then plug it in for a re-charge feel the converter on the power cord after 20 minutes or so - That thing has gotten hotter than my laptop has ever gotten. I worry about that thing catching something on fire or burning one of my children more than anything else...
The riser sounds like a good idea - Most laptops vent to the side and bottom.
