When I was in college I worked at a phone survey place...basically telemarketing although I wasn't in fact selling anything, only soliciting information on which radio stations, newspapers, etc people used. I only worked there a month and a half, I couldn't stand it. Most of the people who worked were a pretty predictable group...20 somethings with low education - the type of people who respond to ads for work that are posted on telephone poles, also a lot of older people supplementing their retirement I suppose. My roommate in college and subsequently one of my best friends worked at several telemarketing and phone survey jobs throughout his college career...I asked him how he could stand it, he replied "it pays the bills." My impression is that most, if not all, of the people who work there would rather not, but where I live there aren't any free apartments.
When they call me, I ask if it's a courtesy call. If they say yes, I inform them I don't accept courtesy calls. If they say no, I politely decline to speak with them further.
