If it's already running synthetic oil and there aren't leaks, you are in great shape. I would run 0W-40. Various brands.... I'd buy Mobil 1 (this is the "European Car formula") because it's easily available. So are the PureOne filters. Advance Auto carries both. Autozone has the oil and probably the filters too.
Regular oil changes are your best weapon against sludge (5000 miles with synthetic?). If the p.o. has been running synthetic and changing regularly, you have nothing to worry about. To look for it, pop the valve cover gasket. Pretty easy. Search archives on the NG 900 board; we will welcome you there. Lots of talk about sludge and how to identify it. It's rare on the turbo engines, we think more because of better care than because of design.
