I am no oil expert. In fact, I have gained a lot of knowledge from the discussions on the various Saabnet BBs. I can state what has worked for me.
Synthetic oil with 5,000-mile oil and filter changes for mixed city/highway driving.
I always use a good filter such as Mobil 1 (too expensive but easy to find), Purolator PureOne (best price and great quality), AC Delco (inexpensive, easy to find, good quality).
As for oil, I use Mobil 1 (easy to find and a reasonable price) and have never had an oil related failure. I have friends using Amsoil and Redline who are die-hard fans of their respective oils.
I started in my 1984 Saab 900T when the only Mobil 1 was 5W-30. That car went for 12 years and 242,000-miles with no oil related failures. In fact, when it was totaled by a drunk driver, the car was still on the original turbo and original engine internals (cams, valves, bearing, etc.).
My 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider has had a steady diet of Mobil 1 15W-50 (manufacture recommended oil is 10W-40 or 20W-50) and is running strong at 95,000 miles.
I started with Mobil 1 5W-30 in my 1998 Saab 900SET, but changed to Mobil 1 0W-40 when it became available. The Mobil 1 0W-40 quieted the engine a bit and has not affect gas mileage at all. I appreciate the added protection of the Mobil 1 0W-40 as I am running a SpeedParts Stage 2 ECU and the car has dynoed with 193HP and 215 Ft-Lb at the wheels. I am watching the discussion about Mobil 1 5W-40 (Delvac 1) with some interest; however I am more the happy with the 0W-40 for the time being.
