yes yes yes I think TKC's point is excellent -- find out what the real increase is, AFTER taxes
40 large sounds great, but it might kick you into a higher tax bracket, and end up being considerably less.
I would also consider future opportunities: are they more lucrative in the new job? Remember, no matter what you're doing now, you probably won't be doing the same thing 5 to 10 years from now. If taking the new job opens more doors for you later, that has real value.
Don't forget to tabulate the real difference:
New job commute = 4 X 90 miles = 360 miles
Old job commute = 5 X 35 miles = 175 miles
(difference doesn't look as big when you do the math like this)
With a sweet ride, you will enjoy the commute. Perhaps a handsfree phone could help you get stuff done in the car. There's always books on tape.
If you can get up really early, you'll still see your kids in the evening. And one day a week at home, albeit working, will be nice.
Need I say that EZPass is a must? Nah, I didn't think so...
