I haven't commuted in Jersey (although I've driven NJP and GSP at all hours of day and night) but 90 miles is probably over the top. I used to do 58 miles near Boston, which was good for 1:15 to 1:45 each way. And 2+ in bad weather. Too much of my life being spent in a car in less than fun conditions.
As others note, do some research. The $$ and the paying for commute costs set off alarms in my head. Unless you have some unique skills they really need and are the prime candidate, this seems waay out of line. Someone else related how he got RIFed less than a year after taking a really good gig, so go in aware. It could be they are trying to avoid hiring a consultant and are trying to sweeten the pot for you, but see the job as a short term way of getting your expertise. You may get the project (or whatever) to a certain point and then cut you loose. For them it is still less than they will pay a consultant (I am one, so I know how it can work).
Get more details:
What is your car allowance? (They may be only willing to buy you a cheapo box like a Hyundai Accent.)
Can you work at home more than 1 day a week?
What can you do to make working at home more appealing for them? (so you don't have to go in as often)
Will you have a contract (potentially good) or be an employee at wiil (not as good)?
If you think you are up for it, you could say, "OK. But you hire me as a consultant for X period. This is what it will cost. Here's what I will do, this is what they will do, etc."
It's more complex, but you could possibly have a bit more control, commute less, write off the car you'll buy, etc. Don't forget to budget for self-employment taxes and health costs..
Been on my own for over 10 years. Would never go back.
