2-3 inches clearance on a mt. bike? You're flirtin' with disaster there. Granted Noel said he wasn't planning to do any hardcore riding, but typically proper fit for a mountain bike is at least 4", preferrably 6" clearance. Kris is right. Top tube length & reach are most important for proper fit especially since the typical mt. bike geometry has a sloping top tube. (God bless Keith Bontrager and his "west coast" geometry). Which gives a person the proper standover clearance.
A newbie will most often end up with a frame too large for him or her. And unfortunately, there are a lot of shops who would rather move floor stock than fit someone correctly if you know what I mean.
