I learned alot of what I know being a Saturn used car manager for 8 years. I was the guy you settled up with when you had an issue with your used car.
I used to settle disputes often at the 50-50 level. When service was sure the customer had broken the car and you do indeed admit to hitting a pot hole, well instead of telling people to go fish, even though we were sure we were right, we would offer them a 50-50 settlement.
I see nothing wrong with the notion that you hit a pothole and broke the mount. But it sounds like you're a motor mount failure analysis consultant as something different is "obvious" to you. That's a slippery slope, after all, the dealer is the expert here.
And half of $240 or $120 to get out of a potentially car wrecking experience, subframe replacement is a common Saturn item at around $1,500, sounds very reasonable to me on balance.
