I think it is a huge--and unwarranted--leap to go from watching an accident in your rearview mirror and finding a pulley by the side of the road to assuming that the car failed somehow. NO car is safe from incompetent driving. I'm not saying that your girlfriend is an incompetent driver (though seeing that all four wheels are still on the car, to me that's more likely than mechanical failure), but over-correction at high speed (65 is still considered fast) is often a quick trip to a rollover. There was a caller on Car Talk a number of weeks ago who told the story of her young son who rolled their car (IIRC a Subaru Legacy) on the highway; the father was a passenger and saw that the cause was over-correction when a truck pulled into their lane. Your girlfriend flashed her lights. Why? To signal you? To warn a car that she thought was pulling into her lane? (Remember, you're looking in your rearview mirror; what did you really see?) I personally have been behind a car on the highway that swerved excessively when it looked like someone was pulling into their lane. The car fishtailed wildly and was almost over into a roll (one rear wheel well into the air) before it straightened out. I'd give a big note of thanks to Saab if I were you.
