OK, to be more specific: I wasn't driving, you weren't driving, Mel wasn't driving, only his girlfriend was. She says it pulled to one side suddenly, but how do we know for sure?
One of the conclusions I draw after the dissection of the Audi sudden-acceleration scare of a number of years ago was that in a stressful situation--i.e. accident--most people are often not aware of what they are really doing or what they did immediately before. Drivers swore up and down that they were standing on the brake as the car accelerated away, even if there was clear evidence that they were pushing the accelerator pedal to the floor.
So, do we believe Mel's girlfriend? Maybe she dropped her lipstick and jerked the wheel when she looked down. Maybe she sneezed and jerked the wheel. Maybe a tie rod broke. There are a lot of maybes that cannot be answered by Mel's post or his investigations so far into the accident. A pulley picked up off the road does not a sudden swerve make.
That said, if I were Mel and something like that happened to my loved one I wouldn't be putting a shroud over my car, or waiting for the insurance company to come by. I'd have that pulley in my hand looking for the Saab part number; in front of the engine, looking to see where it might have come off. Or having the car towed to an independent mechanic to go over every inch of the front end to look for damage not caused by the accident--a broken ball joint or tie rod end. Evidence from those sorts of investigations would put teeth into a hate letter--otherwise what's the point? But since Mel seems to mostly want to put it behind him rather than taking the more painful (because it makes him remember) course of really trying to find out if mechanical failure caused the accident, why bother doing anything other than sending thanks.
