Hand positions with airbags.. what's "best"?

My daughter has been told in her driver's ed class that the way airbags inflate makes the usual 9 and 3 o'clock and 10 and 2 o'clock positions unsafe. If you have an accident, she is told, the airbag will damage your hands or slam them into your face if your hands are in these postions. They say use 8 and 4 o'clock.
Since I have drilled into her two hands on the wheel at 9 & 3 or 10 & 2, she says she feels like she has much less control at 8 & 4. Can't say I disagree. I told her she should do what the instructor says for her class (which uses Mazda 6's as the training cars). I wonder how this differs by vehicle?
SO....what do people here think? I usually have my thumbs wrapped over the upper spokes on the wheel on my 9000 or my wife's Exploder. That seems pretty safe to me. A friend was in an accident a few years back in a rental Buick and the airbag went off. One of his thumbs was snapped back to his forearm, but he didn't have them wrapped over the spokes--they were actually resting on the airbag unit. he was in a cast for 8 weeks and therapy for 3 months. I can see where the instructors are coming from, but disagree with respect to control.
I've been travelling, so I haven't had a chance to talk to the driver's ed folks. If I can reach them I'll report back.
Better to not have airbags at all, IMHO.
All thoughts are welcome.
