how 8 & 4 can make sense, but I've been driving so long at 9 & 3 that the lower position feels strange. My 9000 wheel is more or less 9 & 3, as is my wife's Exploder, so that's what my daughter is used to, but she is new at driving, so it shouldn't be too difficult for her to change if appropriate.
I shuffle steer, and found that is actually a bit hard for her to learn (versus hand over hand), but she is getting there. I set up cones in a parking lot and that helped a lot as she basically ran thru a slow speed autocross. I got her to do all but the tight turns without moving her hands, and she said it really helped.
I do keep thinking of disconnecting the airbag, though.
