Kate -- Hi. I understand your dilema! My husband just totaled our 86 Volvo 760 Turbo -- no airbags but the car did its magic and my husband had not a scratch. It's sad though, we were hoping to get that 200K mileage badge! I'm biased to keeping an old car if it's truly a classic.
I think the first thing I'd do would be to get a couple of opinions. At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link to mechanics by state. Are you in Michigan? I lived there for a time and it was NOT easy to find foreign car people -- for obvious reasons. I'm assuming you're a female, like me -- sad to say but until I really know a shop I have my husband establish the relationship first -- used to be my dad because he was in the industry for 40 years and knew what was what! You might want to take a guy with you when you shop around, a "car guy" is ideal.
Anyway, if the other mechanics give you the same news, prioritize what you need done and do the safety-related work first.
OTOH, we replaced our Volvo with our second Saab - a *gorgeous* 94 deep blue
900SE Conv. Turbo. w/ only about 71K. I'm hoping this one will be a classis too and we intend to pamer her. Am happy!
Best wishes -- B.
