Took it to 200k. Still had the original clutch, but it was going! Started rusting where a poor body repair had been done, and came due on too much maintenance all at once:
brakes, tires, clutch, 90Kservice-timingbelt/waterpump, and a couple of other things. All in all, big money for the car (like Kate's car, except mine were safety issues.)
It was a 5spd standard, and it was a great car. Plenty of personality. I would have been in a TL in a heartbeat if they had a standard tranny then. The acura was totally dependable, and never stranded me ever. Hated the lack of a fold down rear seat, but it had a much more user friendly trunk. I did put in a stiffer suspension.
I love lot's of things about the 9-5, but it has plenty of problem/challenge area's, too. I put in a stiffer suspension! At 130K, the saab isn't tighter than the acura was. It does get a bit better gas mileage. Given the synchro's in the 5spd w/the saab, it doesn't gain anything over the quite clunky 5spd in the Legend. In fairness, the legend was in the last year of it's run, and my saab is a very early 9-5, but I'm still disappointed in how many known problem area's were carried over and not really addressed: SID's, Idler pulleys, etc. Plastic brackets as part of the one piece fog light$$$.
In this day & age, I think it's unnecessary to have the "extra maintenance" excuse because the car is European vs Japanese. That isn't part of the appeal for me. Some of the saab features I really like, and the car fit's like a glove once you've had it for a while; the ergonomics are great. Really wish it was a hatchback!
On the other hand, I drove my dad's 1990? TL for a couple of days last year, and it was a fun car, too. Even in automatic! It was still solid, had a good ride and handling (much better than my saab was before the suspension work).
Had a friend who just bought a TSX; we looked at lots of vehicles. Almost had him into a used 9-5 aero for the same money. But the competition is definately out there. I'll be glad to see the new improved 9-5 when it gets here.
Yeah, I know this has been long, but I stumbled on a mint looking, kissing cousin to my old acura today with 57K and not a scratch on it. And I twitched!
