If the plug contacts the metal in the DI nipples, then thats all that is required. Does not have to be pressure, will jump tiny gaps. It is vital that the plugs be grounded.
But no need to do this if the engine runs ok with the DI, that already indicates that it is firing on all four cylinders.
The red DI's often do a sudden death at 100-120 Kmiles*. Then its all fire on no cylinders, and you might see smoke and smell burn epoxy potting compound which is very foul. If a DI fails like this (smoke/stink), no need for any testing. You must then leave the ignition off as sometimes a short in the DIed DI will damage the wiring harne$$. If you get towed, sometimes tow truck operators will leave the ignition on, might be better to remove DI connector.
* some older DIs where the miles are not accumulated quickly (low mileage vehicles, older) can have DI's go flakey instead of sudden death. And DI's that are nearing sudden death, with often prefer to go when heat stressed (summer). Sudden death DI's will not show any indications of any problems, no CELs, nothing... just sudden death. Sudden death DI failures are failures of the electronics, the coils are probably working properly when the failure occurs.
If you have a spare DI, you can replace and be on your way in a few minutes. It would be good to know if your DI is orignal or newer. If in doubt about vehicle history, pull the DI and read the 4 digit date code on the label seen when the DI is removed.
