First piece of advice: head over to roadbikereview.com and scour the message boards there and read the reviews. Lots of great info.
I also have a Giant hardtail and recently got a road bike. I have Ranier, love those disc brakes.
Giant and Trek both make good bikes. Don't let anyone tell you that there's something wrong with Giant. Some dopes don't like them because they're the biggest company and that they're made in Taiwan. In fact, I think the Trek 1000 is also made in Taiwan, you've got to go up to the 1500 or maybe one higher to get an American-made Trek.
Anyway, if you've got more stores around, definitely check out other brands as well. Whatever you do, make sure you buy the bike that fits you and your expected riding style the best. Don't end up on some ultra-stiff aluminum bike with aero tubes or something just because it had a good price.
FWIW my wife and I are training for a 100 mile ride later this year, and I went with a Lemond.
