I also live in Minneapolis.

I don't know which shop you went to, but the people at Freewheel in the cedar-riverside area and the Bike co-op near the intersection of Minnehaha and Lake have seemed very nice to me. These two shops also have decent selection of used bicycles.

The fellows at higher-end shops (Flanders, Grand Performace, Kenwood etc) are generally knowledgable, but the'll also want to sell you a bike that's at least $1500. Erik's has always rubbed me the wrong way (I worked in a shop ~10 years ago) but your experience may vary.

Oh, if you really want to steep yourself in the Mpls cycling culture a visit to The wienery (at cedar & riverside, very near Cedar-cultural-center) would be worth your time. The guy who runs the place, Pat, is friendly and amiable and makes some of the double-decker bikes you might see running around town. Their weinie-mac + caramel rool also can't be beat for the early morning.

One other thought - there's generally an internal classified list in each of the local cycling teams. You might be able to find a very nice used bike by searching for the websites of either Grand Performance, Flanders Brothers, Loon State or similar roadie clubs.

With a saab in minneapolis - have you been to see Jerry yet? 26th and Pleasant - he can fix you saab cheaper and faster (and with more profanity) than anybody else local.
