You're probably going to get a lot of responses. Some won't be on-topic, but you'll have fun reading them.
For me, I think Saabs deliver the most overall car for the money. They are not necessarily "the best" at any one thing (except turbocharged engines) but the overall package delivers a lot more than is obvious at a casual look. They last and hold together well. Having driven them for 22 years, I can say that you dont' get tired of them.
The performance of a 4-cylinder engine that's both economical and has the poke of a good six or a small V-8.
Practicality. While Saab no longer makes a hatchback sedan--a major failure, IMHO--they still hold a lot of stuff and are great for long trips. I really like the seats. They are one of the best features of the car.
Safety. My wife and kids are in these cars and I want them in something that can take a hit--and will protect them.
All-weather capability. Most cars with good tires can get through a snowstorm, but Saabs are more sure-footed and capable in any weather on any kind of road. And they handle great--securely and preditably at ridiculous speeds on back roads.
Smartest or most educated? Who knows? Maybe other characteristics: more individualistic?
Saabs are quirky. They are not as reliable as Japanese cars, but they are more fun to drive and better for the long haul. They cost more to buy and own but people who know them keep buying them. They have a small but loyal base and you're right, they do have to maintain that base while growing a new one. Most here will tell you that overall package that is a Saab is worth the extra cost to run one.
Has the brand been weakened? Probably. They have, to a large degree, lost much of their distinctive appearance. The new grille on the 9-5 makes it look like a Chevy--a mistake. I worry about GM making Saabs too American and decreasing the overall quality of materials. But OTOH, maybe GM can get some of the quirky, early-failure items to last longer. If it looks, feels and drives like a Saab I'll be happy.
Hope this helps. Good luck on the project.
