I was chased by a pair of drunk guys (Their weapon of choice was an already-opened beer bottle, so I feel pretty confident saying that they were drunk...driving style aside) in their 30's one evening in Spokane, Washington. I accidentally flipped my brights on while changing lanes behind them... and they didn't take kindly to that. This was on Division Street, the North-South main drag... three lanes in each direction, and stop lights every few blocks. They eventually came nose-to nose with my car, got out, and started cussing and threatening... and throwing open (but not empty) beer bottles at the windshield. Did my life flash in front of my eyes? No, but the safety and well being of myself an my three passengers were at risk, and I was running on adrenaline and reactions... I don't remember shifting, but I put a pair of black stripes on that road better than I ever had before, and all that my passengers could say was how well I had driven in that situation. (I'm not trying to brag.)
If I'm ever in a high-speed, life-flashing-before-my-eyes, situation, my guess is that stopping will be priority #1. (I hope I am never in such a situation...)
I agree that we can't know how we will react to different situations. While I think that you're right about humans causing most accidents, I hate to think that taking control away from the driver is a for-sure good thing. Might human nature find other things to focus on with those freed-up resources, making the technology a wash? Ask any teacher if it's a good thing to reduce the involvement of a student if said student isn't engaged in the classroom activity. Most would say giving that student more to do will keep them engaged in the task at hand, rather than side-tracked, becoming a distraction. If drivers are truly engaged in driving (be it with a manual or automatic), dare I say that accidents will be reduced?
Good points, Atul. Good discussion. (I was pleased to find the graphic too! Made me laugh.)
Oh yeah, I drive a manual 9000 Aero.
