I'm with vvk on this one.

A torque converter is what transmits the torque from the engine to the transmission. Ever notice how an automatic will idle forward if it's in gear, but it won't die when you hold the brake pedal? The torque converter allows this to be the case. It essentially disconnects any direct connection between engine and trans, allowing for the wheels (trans) to be stationary, while the engine is running. Likewise, when you start to go, engine speed and wheel speed are not fixed by a given ratio (as in a manual transmission, where the clutch acts as the torque converter). What vvt is saying is that the engine not being directly linked to the wheels is what makes a big difference in the feel of the driving. Modern torque converters lock up at given torque amounts or at given RPMs, making for a locked ratio. Also, BMW's SMG, and other similar transmissions, actually use clutches which are computer controlled, so ratios are truly fixed, and shifts are really fast (Faster than a leg and arm can do it).
