You couldn't be more correct. The muscle cars handle like poo, stop bad, have the sub-par build quality you speak of, are unreliable as heck by todays standards, but that is the reason they are so cool. They did perform better than 15 second quarters though. Most of your desireable muscle clicked off 13's from the showroom, and 12's were easily obtainable with a simple rear end swap.
If fuel wasn't a factor, I would drive my Z every day of the week. Because its such a handful to drive down the road, you don't find yourself daydreaming and not paying attention becasue you really have to be on the stick to keep the thing pointed straight. When I drive my wifes Aero at a "comfortable" speed around my house, I routinely look down to find I'm going 65-70mph on 50mph roads. In the Camaro, that "happy" speed is generally 5mph under the speed limit.
There is no question at all that a C5 vette is every bit the car as ANY muscle car, but the overall FEELING of being behind the wheel of an old shag-nasty bruiser is where the appeal is, not so much in the performance.
