I have a book that compiles road tests of all the cars of the fifties and sixties that were done when they were new, just the way they came from the factory. Tires were usually the limiting factor, with slicks and a few minor modifications they were faster but the way they came from the factory they were no where near as fast as most people think. A 427 Vette was about the fastest with a high 12 second quarter (about the same as a new M5). The 427 Cobra was high elevens as I recall. I drove a lot of them (including a 427 Vette), and spent a lot of time in a friends 440 six pack 'Cuda (with pistol grip shifter in Lime Green). It was a real hoot and would lay rubber through three gears, but for the same money I'd take a new Porche, Ferrari etc any day.
