Before I get on a rant, I do want to say there were a few things that were good for Saab with GM. Namely availability of some after market parts, like break pads, and stuff like that. Other than this issue, GM simply blew it. Did not understand the Saab line and the people that drove them. BTW, isn't this what a car MFG is supposed to do? Understand the market that they are in? Bringing on the 9-7 was a joke on so many levels along with the Saabaroo was just simply bad. If these boondoggles are included in Saab loosing money, then it is no wonder they lost money. Just pile on the development cost of these two losers along with the other issues....
What other normal engine can get 28-35 MPG with 200+ HP in a small midsized to a midsized vehicle? GM had an engine all along and did not put it in any other cars (I did hear a rumor of an I4 in a Saturn, but could not confirm).
Instead they put the V6 in some of the cars when it simply was not needed. We have one in a 9-5 wagon and it is a nice engine, but it simply is not needed. We have another 9-5 Wagon with an I4 and it is just as good.
Please someone by Saab and let me run the show. Please. I will concentrate on quality, performance, MPG, and research. Put someone in charge that knows what the Saab car's really represent. Simplify and make better every year. 9-5 I4, 9-5 I4 Aero. Maybe keep the Wagon, maybe not. 9-3 I4 and 9-3 Aero. That is it. Get rid of the ugly GM radio and try and get the price down as much as possible. Try and make it stupid for people to purchase any other car (well only if they really want to).
I agree with that the BMW strategy was just brain death in action. Someone had to come up with something and hired a bunch of monkeys typing until the typed BMW and they formed a strategy (and I use this term very loosely).
Now begs the question, did GM have this has a plan all along to tank Saab. Just too well built, too much performance, too much handling, too much competition for Cadillac? Cadillac is the brand that should be going away and keeping Saab (well may this is a bit too much, but had to put it in here).
Anyhow, looks like I might start a Saab repair shop soon.... Wish me luck.
