I wouldn't buy one. My wife and I JUST got done cross shopping a bunch of top tier Japanese compact cars and the order of preference was as follows:
1) Mazda3 (hope to take delivery this week)
2) Honda Civic
3) Honda Insight
4) Honda Fit Sport
5) Toyota Corolla
With the exception of the 3, they're all pretty much "appliance mobiles" so the differences are in styling, comfort, and power. For an exclusively around town car the Fit might be fine, but it was underpowered and very noisy on the highway. Encourage your parents to do their research and find something comfortable and functional. In recent years my mother and aunt, both recently retired, bought a RAV4 and an Outback respectively. The higher ride height in both and the good seats in the Outback were definite deciding factors.
A Honda will never be as "solid" as a Saab, but no worries about either of them being ready for the junkyard in 5 years!
