I believe the electronic rust control works well in the situation it was designed for: ships. It relies on all the panels being in good electrical contact, which may not be the case in a car. In a ship, it's submerged in electrolyte (salt water), so everything is connected...
In this case, it was a dime sized bubble in the trunk area under the window. I doubt the box caused it, but it certainly didn't prevent it. Our 1993 900 had zero rust when we bought it in 1999 and has very little today (we get it sprayed annually)
