The Fit is a great car... but I think it's only great if you live in an urban area and need a small "disposable" car. I think for its small size, versatility, and low price, you sacrifice an incredible amount of comfort and refinement.
How much do your parents drive? If they live in a close-knit retirement area and they just need a car to run 5 minutes up the road for some milk the Fit could be a good fit (haha) for them.
My 80-year-old grandfather has been dropping hints of trading in their 2001 Odyssey with 100k miles on it for a Fit. They do a LOT of traveling (with a large dog) and I don't think the Fit would work well for them. I did see a dim lightbulb go off when I mentioned the 9-5 wagon though... He wouldn't stop talking about how "impressed" he was with my 9-5 when I first got it, so we'll see where that goes.
Personally, I think it's sort of silly to spend $17k on a BRAND NEW strip down base model car when you can get a couple-year-old car with a decent CPO warranty for the same price that comes with oodles more in the comfort and safety department. And it doesn't necessarily need to be a Saab... Just my $0.02. Let us know what happens.
