Good that you know about some of the bigger issues Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 27 Jun 2010 15:46:15 In Reply to: About to buy a used Audi A4 or A6. I have found that my 1996 Audi A4 (owned since new) is much harder to maintain than my 9000, see some of my previous comments on timing belts, thermostats, wheel bearings and suspension parts. Perhaps "JonAero1" can put the front end in "service position" in twenty minutes, but it will probably take as long or longer to return it to normal position, including lining up the bumper and getting it to stay hooked on to the clips - I'm nowhere close on that time.
Let me add that the A/C system is also a bear: a leaky evaporator (a usual event on 1996s) or heater core (frequent failure on later years) requires removal of the center console and dashboard to get to the parts; the five flap motors controlling the airflow are prone to wear, and a couple of them require similar disassembly for access.
I redid the suspension parts over the winter and needed an oxyacetylene torch and an air hammer (had to outsource this one) to remove the notorious pinch bolt that holds the upper control arms in place.
