I think you're assuming the sole purpose of Sport utes is to go off road but I don't think people really buy them for that reason. In essense they are a station wagon (an exceedingly useful devise) that sits up high and has percieved superior all weather ability. Way down the list is the possibility of light offroad use for activities like hunting, fishing sking, kaykaking etc.--and for most that isn't even an issue. Admitted I was pretty anti-sport-ute until I moved to the mountains of CO. But AWD isn't a toy at 9,000 feet and I never regretted having it. I had a Subaru, which makes a lot sense for most applications, but after spending a lot of time in various sport-utes I found some limitations with the Subbie. One of the things I really like about sport-utes is sitting up high--like it or not I feel so much more relaxed in urban traffic and parking lots when I can see well and to me it's worth something. Last winter my wife and I took a trip with my daughter and our 4 grandkids. Instead of having to take two cars we took her Suburban and we all fit in complete comfort along with lugguage for all of us for the weekend. And when the weather turned bad I have to confess there was confort in sitting up out of the road spray in a big heavy vehicle. And yes I'll admit a Saab would have handled just fine in the same conditions and is probably every bit as safe, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have FELT as safe. Am I ready to buy and big hulking fullfledged sport-ute (I own a small one)? No, but I do understand why people do. There's a reason you see so many of them and the popularity of cross-overs would suggest people still want some of those features.
