I'm ready to put a snow blade on my 9000 so I can blow off the road the idiots who change lanes without signalling or looking... The physically small people who compensate for it by buying the biggest SUV they can find, then they can't see your 'car' when they go to move left, because the passenger side window sill is too high... the clowns (again, SUVs are a particularly bad offender here) who insist on riding your rear bumper, especially at night... I'm convinced I could do 120 on a 40 at night and some SUV driver would latch onto my rear... (do they watch too much restrictor plate NASCAR?) I've come to two conclusions in all of this... 1. The vast majority of the population care little about cars or driving. If you want to buy an econobox, that's fine with me, I've owned econoboxes too, but if you want to use the road you should at least know how the road should be used.
2. Large vehicles attract a certain type of personalities, who seem to suffer from 'big dick syndrome'... if my car is big, so must my... with this goes a kind of insecurity that leads to arrogance... why is that little SAAB in my way? I'm bigger than he is...
3. OK, 3 conclusions... traffic laws are generally written and imposed in a manner to make it easy to effect 'cut and dried' violations (70 in a 55 on an open highway, etc.) tailgating? too difficult to impose, the 'violator' would definitely contest that one, probably successfully, so waste PD time, and yield no money...
I'm not saying that all SUVs are bad, they're not, I'm definitely not saying that all SUV drivers are bad, I know plenty who are not. But, in eastern MA at least, bad drivers have flocked to the sanctuary of SUVs at afrightening (for the rest of us) rate. I know the conscious thinking is, 'this will save me if I get in an accident', to which subconscious adds, 'I don't need to drive safely, I can shave, put on my makeup, write my grocery list (I have witnessed all of these three in recent weeks - where was the donut scoffer then?) and I will be safe'.
But, until Detroit can build a desirable car in the $20-35,000 range, we are stuck with these things, because without them, Motor City would quickly become 'The Urban Region Formerly Known as Motor City'.
End of rant, where's the Tylenol?
