It's not just driver's ed

don't expect that Greece has an excellent driver's ed. system or anything... The written part (which is most rules etc are taught) is hard, and most fail at least once, put the driving test is a joke.
Why? Because you can pay them off! It is in fact a very intricate system where the driving schools are also involved..
Anyway, what I think is the difference is that driving is much more demanding in Europe. Roads are narrow, often requiring skill to maneuver around in, lanes not always separated with a barrier and challenging curves are much more frequent. Furthemore, you have to change gears -a concept unknown to many Americans accustomed to auto trans- and cars are much smaller.
As a result, most people actually *drive* as opposed to direct a moving sofa. Respect for other drivers is also increased. Where in America will cars in both directions drive on the shoulder to let someone pass?
My bet is that a large percentage of American drivers especially those who tailgate, use their high beams and try to enforce the speed limit on other would be unable to drive in many European countries.
