Misplaced Yankee is right. Used as intended--for carrying lots of people and stuff--an SUV is hard to beat. Most minivans have soft rides but take them down a bad road and the suspension isn't up to it. And they handle poorly loaded or unloaded.
We have an Explorer and it does fine on long trips for vacations, skiing, or my daughter's dog shows with four people (we don't have the 3rd row seats) and LOADS of stuff. Gets 18 to 20 mpg on the highway empty or loaded to the gills, including carrying a windsurfer and 2 kayaks on the roof, running 70 to 75.
And if you want handling there are good suspension kits for it that make it much more carlike.
Good luck.
