I have had my share of 4x4 (a full size Bronco and a CJ7) and have driven in very difficult conditions in the Rocky and Cascade ranges. When asked by acquaintances about various difficulties when driving their SUVs, I have replied politely about the difference between 4-wheel drive and 4 wheel brakes, tire choices, mass, and friction. In most cases I have been stopped mid-sentence with some comment about “the salesman said” or "but I have 4-wheel drive”.
It is not the SUV, per say, that is the problem as you have noted. It is the arrogant attitude of many who own SUVs that the mere purchase of the vehicle has made them invulnerable to the dictates of physics and weather.
