itself, at least most cars don't :-).
Many drivers seem to confuse traction with braking.
There should not be much dispute about a 4WD or AWD car having better traction on ice or snow than a FWD or RWD car with similar tires or weights. So a 4WD or AWD car can get up to speed faster without much trouble under slippery conditions. This is where a 4WD or AWD vehicle excels.
However, brakes are essentially the same on all cars, with few exceptions, i.e. on all four wheels. So whether you are driving a 4WD, AWD, or whatever on 4 wheels, you have the same setup for brakes, and there is no advantage in stopping power regardless of drive type and within consideration for tire types, vehicle weight, etc..
Clearly, many SUVs are heavier than our dear old Saabs by a few hundred to a thousand pounds. So, unless these SUVs have superior brakes and great tires to compensate for their weights, they stop no better than any other car.
Having good traction often gives a driver false impression about stopping distance and this is where many inexperienced SUV drivers make mistakes.
