a ('96 Exploder) I'm aware of just how invincible they can make you feel. And having explored some of its snowy road limits, I would much rather go to the edge of control in my Saab (or any good handling, well-shod FWD car) than in an SUV. The size affects more than braking power.
If you lose a 4500-lb SUV and get sideways on the freeway (or a backroad) in limited traction conditions at 40, 50 or 60 or more, you have a lot of physics working against you to get it back in shape. You all of a sudden realize just how high that center of gravity is--and how it is working against you. It can get pretty exciting. The point from which you can easily get these things back under control is not nearly as far out as it is in a car. But because it's easy to get to that point without realizing it, you get a lot of people doing el rollos down the median strip
Remember, most people driving these things aren't car enthusiasts, they are the same people who used to drive regular cars and are oblivious to what's going on beneath and around them. Then you add in some selfishness, a little arrogance, some road rage, and poor driving skills and you have a sure-fire ticket for a date with a tow truck--or worse.
My wife is Ms. Obey the Speed Limit and she just drives according to the conditions. But the only place she's gotten stuck is backing off the edge of the glacier we call a driveway.
