I usually get a Saturn as a loaner car when my 9-5's in the shop and while I've never driven the coupe, I found the old S100? to be a terrible car. Terribly underpowered, and I didn't feel all that safe. When I got an "L" series I found it to be much better.
Last time it was in... I got an Ion. Although I don't care for its looks, and the seats aren't anything special (neither were the old ones though) I think the new Saturn is a huge improvement over the last generation. I'd say the new Ion is on par with the "L", just smaller. Both the transmission (how many 5 spd auto's are there in this category? My guess is one.) and the engine have improved dramatically. The overall build quality seems better to me as well. Still don't like those center mounted gauges though, The automakers say it "opens up the interior" and "is more ergonomic" although I only hear "global IP"
Another thing is the dinky steering wheel, its like driving a go-cart, only its slower and it doesn't handle as well.
Overall though... not bad considering I could've bought 5 of them for the price of my Aero wagon.
