With all due respect, since your work at Saturn, my buddy who is an auto journalist is probably the most balanced, non-biased journalists in the industry. I have never, ever seen a car so harshly criticized by most car magazines than the Ion. Some of them were actually painful to read.
The center mounted dash pods are a joke at the expense of the consumer and the benefit of the manufacturer. While the Mini Cooper S does not have one, the regular Mini does. I was not aware the Z8 had one. However, I think when a car is as screamingly good as both the Mini and the Z8, people are more willing to overlook the center mounted dash guages.
In the Ion's favor, he did say the engine was powerful, but that was honestly all he had to say about it that was good. Saturn needed to hit it out of the ballpark with this car, and it doesn't look like it did it.
It's too bad- I've always pulled for Saturn. I test drove a 1st generation SC2 and thought it was a fun car.
