No offense there, I'm wrong more often that I can count to.
Yeah I have read quite a bit about lean/rich scenarios and more of it, seen a lot of different scenarios in the shop with different cars.
Cheap catalytic converters is a plague since as you say, they only guarantee (barely) to work right after they are installed and may not be working 2 years later.
If the car is perfectly tuned up they might go on working for years but a failed O2 sensor can kill a cheap cat in no time whereas a factory cat could take the beating and survive.
If you are a paying member of IATN you can look up my help request from some years back when I was battling a 96 Volvo 960 and found out the hard way that, after market cats AND Volvo oem rebuild cats were not big enough for that big 6 cyl engine and they died about 6 months after being installed even when the car was running perfectly.
