I can vouch for the Passat. My wife and I have a 2001.5 Passat wagon 1.8t and it's been a fantastic car. We've had it since new and I've had the following repairs:
Radiator at about 750mi (bad casting, defective from the factory replaced under warranty)
Door latch at about 11000mi (replaced under warranty)
Coil packs at about 25000mi (replaced under recall - free)
Cam seal at about 28000mi (replaced under warranty)
Tires at 33000mi ($375)
Inspection and alignment at 35000mi ($250)
MAF at about 43000mi (replaced in 30 minutes by me $89)
Bent control arm at 48000mi (wife slid into a curb - replaced by me in about 1.5 hours $90 for used part)
Tires at 51000 mi ($225 - others wore WAY too quickly so, these were partially covered under a pro-rated warranty)
Rear rotors at 52000mi (warped - replaced by me in about 2 hours $43)
Blinker/hazard light switch at 53000mi (replaced by me $38)
Synthetic oil and filter changes every 5000 miles.
Spark plug inspection every 10000 miles.
Transmission flush and overall inspection at 52000 miles ($383)
New badge on the plastic cover on top of the engine at 52000 miles ($18)
That's the whole history of the car, in a nutshell. It's been utterly superb to own. It looks and drives like new. It's gets about 32-33mpg on the highway and cruises very nicely at 110 mph. I like the comfort and the ride more than that of my Saab. The fit, finish, and materials are also better than the Saab, IMO.
As for the dealerships, yes, you're FAR better off finding a good indy. The dealers are fairly reasonably priced, but, the service is poor and almost every time I've used a dealer, the car has come back with some sort of damage.
Parts (though I haven't had to buy hardly any) are substantially less expensive than my Saab and are very easy to find online.
I don't have direct experience with the TDi engines, but, from what I hear, they're very inexpensive to run and are superbly reliable, too.
That's my 2.5 cents.
