Geez, it didn't seem like that many. We've had 4 'problems' in 6 years. The rest were maintenance items or something we broke.
We never did have any problems with the coil packs - we had the recall done just to have it done. Free coil packs; what the hey?
The rear rotors warped due to the tire monkeys not torquing the lug bolts correctly. There was no way to prove it, so, whaddaya gonna do?
The door latch was due to a friend of ours slamming the door so hard that the microswitch for the interior lighting broke. So, that was more of an electrical problem caused by a bonehead who wasn't thinking.
Yes, I do nearly everything myself. The transmission flush was done by professionals and I do have periodic inspections done just to make sure that I'm not missing anything.
The Passat has been just as reliable as the Toyotas and Subarus we've owned. Has it needed a little attention? Aparently it has, but, the $155 I've spent on actual repairs is certainly reasonable for a 6-year-old car. And it's far nicer to drive than any Honda, Toyota or Subie that I've driven. In the 2 years I've had my Saab, I've replaced far more than that and it still needs quite a bit.
It's all relative, but, I've really enjoyed the Passat. And so has my wife.
