she won't go for anything older than an '04, and would only spend a couple of grand more than what she gets for her civic. although the bmw, m-b, and 9-5 are good deals, they are still just outside of the price range. more importantly, repair costs will add to that with those cars. the mazda 6 seems like a deal, though it seems the fuel economy may stink (anyone have real highway numbers?). the passat is at the upper end of what we'd spend, but the 40mpg offsets that somewhat (and i dig the idea of a turbo diesel engine). while poking around, i also found a jetta tdi wagon, which i wasn't aware of. this may be the sweet spot. btw, as far as an a4 wagon, it's smaller, more expensive than, but otherwise about the same as, a passat (and no tdi option).
