... "best kept secret." But, really, they're not a 'mainstream' kind of car. I don't know why people just don't buy them. I've been driving past the same 2000 9-5 Aero that's been sitting on a car lot for about 2 and a half YEARS! It started out at around $13.5k. Now it's down to about $9800. I'll bet that I could walk in there and give them $7500 cash for it and they'd take it.
I don't know why they don't sell. They just don't. So, the value drops like a wayward meteor. I bought my '95 900SE Turbo a little more than 2 years ago with just under 60k miles on it - needed nothing - for $3200. I have yet to perform a repair that's an actual failure. I've done a bunch of preventive maintenance on it, but, beyond that, it just runs, and runs, and runs...
No doubt, Saabs are great cars, but, people just don't buy them. Maybe it's the phonetics of the name... who knows? It may have a little to do with that they have a reputation of being expensive to run. Yes, parts can be (but, usually aren't) more expensive (buy them online from the sponsors here). I think that Saab dealerships have really shot themselves in the foot by their own incompetence. They don't know how to fix them. As a result, they never fix the problems right the first go-round. Thus they come back for a lot of re-repairs. This gives them the reputation of being very unreliable. Word spreads, people become disloyal to the brand, and sales and values decline. If dealers would hire competent, Saab-trained techs, and not RAPE people for the cost of parts, they might be able to turn it around. But, it may be too late for that.
So, for now, those in the know (you, me, this community...) have found great cars that are reliable, safe, fun to drive, out of the ordinary, and a pleasure to own for very little money. Stick close to this website and learn to do your own maintenance and repairs and you'll be hooked.
